Sorry am just a little fed up with animal rescue and DVS’ complacency.

Incidently heard a couple of weeks ago that Derek has passed away. STC vet found him dead in the stables in a sitting position so he thinks his heart gave out on him. So sad after all the work Rick put in.

Sad news today. After 9 months with us, we had to make a very sad decision on consultation with STC vets. Just signed the consent form for Dillon’s euthanasia. It’s very very sad and it would be wonderful if he could live out his days with us but unfortunately we are not at such liberty with public funds when there could be other horses that come in the future who can use the funds and be re-homed and honestly we don’t have that much funds either. Further the vet was not sure if Dillon isn’t in some discomfort. He’s old and creaky and may not be that happy either. Feel very sad to say good bye to a long life but its going to be quiet peaceful ending for him with lethal injection and a burial. Some dignity in death. Although I should add I was berated for wanting to shoot the horse and sending it to the zoo to be fed. For whatever reason someone got the wrong end of the stick and decided to accuse me before finding out the truth no actually she did but than she accused me of lying to her … go figure. Derek on the other hand is going to STC RDA which is just the most perfect thing for him. He has bounced back well and is completely sound and this job is perfect for him. At least there is some joy in this. The good thing is that Dillon got to run around in Awana for his last days and be free and happy. Good bye to a noble gentle creature that taught so many at Kiara how to ride!

Taman Equine now has one of these dogs which we have renamed Syabu. He is very cute. 8 months old and is running around playing with the stable dogs and all the people there – perfectly independent and self sufficient. The joys of having a mongrel! Never have to worry too much about them. Smart lively and cute. If you would like to adopt a dog please do contact the SPCA.

Greetings from SPCA Selangor!

We are happy to update you on the progress of the 23 dogs we have rescued from Pulau Selat Kering, as well as the 4 neutered strays from Pulau Ketam and two puppies found at the orang asli settlement. Read on to meet the 28 lovely island dogs, who are in good health and slowly beginning to trust again. While many of them are still timid around people, dedicated volunteers like Roli and Marianne continue to spend time socializing them, giving them the attention and love that they need!

These amazing dogs are up for immediate adoption – with the exception of Mr Miracle, Karuna and Wowow, who have already found homes! If you can open your home and heart to even one dog, it would make a world of difference for that lucky one. They have been through so much – being abandoned in the mangrove swamp for weeks without food and water, clinging on to the mangrove roots when the tide rises so they don’t drown. Each one of these dogs has a sad story to tell, they probably have never known a gentle hand or a kind word.We need to let them know that they are worth something, that they deserve to live and be happy like other dogs.

Many thanks to Ms Kah Yein, Ms Lillian and the Subang Jaya Buddhist Association for sponsoring the medical treatment for the first two batches of dogs! We would also like to thank each and every one of you who have contributed in cash or kind towards the Pulau Ketam project. Your ongoing support enables us to ;

* continue our rescue & relief work at Pulau Selat Kering and the surrounding islands, there appears to be another 8-10 dogs still on the islands
* Feed, shelter, care for and provide medical treatment for the rescued dogs, as well as the neutered strays from Pulau Ketam
* Offer free neutering for pets and community animals in Pulau Ketam, to prevent the population from growing further. During our first Kempen Kembiri supported by the Dept of Vet Services and UPM, 23 dogs and 7 cats were neutered for free, and our Klinik Kembiri team stayed for 3 days to provide post-op monitoring and care
* Carry out our education work through street teams in PulauKetam, highlighting the importance of neutering and this month dog bite prevention. Over 30 volunteers went door-to-door at our last Kempen Kembiri, and managed to secure registrations of 24 more animals – 12 cats and 12 dogs – for the Kempen Kembiri this month!

Please do drop by to meet these lovely islanders any day from 9am – 4pm at the SPCA Animal Shelter in Ampang Jaya. We would appreciate any donations of dog kibbles, canned food and dog treats for these dogs, as well as old towels, anti-bacterial detergents and newspaper.

BooBoo and Wowow were our first two dogs rescued from the island of Pulau Selat Kering. When Booboo first arrived, she was very skinny and timid. After about a week, she started filling in nicely and became friendlier by the day. She is about 2-3 years old. She may look rather intimidating, but she is gentle and very sweet.

________________________________

Good news – Little Wowow has been adopted ! As you can tell from the photos, she is one playful, adorable and goofy dog! She was very thin and covered in mud when she first came in, but after a few good baths and good food, she is now a tubby little dog with a beautiful black coat.

________________________________

When Cuddly was rescued, she had a trans-venereal tumor. She was in pain, and was very timid. After her check-up at the vet, she was admitted for almost two weeks as she had to undergo surgery to remove the tumor. She was also spayed at the same time. Fully recovered now, she is slowly but surely trusting us more – she seems to be constantly gazing into the distance – perhaps thinking of her terrible ordeal. She is very shy, and very gentle. She really deserves a good home with an understanding and patient family.

________________________________

Daya tends to be very wary of people, letting out tiny growls whenever one ventures too close for comfort. However, peeping at her from a window – she is relaxed and playful when no one is watching. She has put on a good amount of weight, and her dull coat has turned glossy! She has beautiful brown eyes, and a very sad face. Due to her wariness, we may consider rehoming her at an orchard or farm – where she will be cared for, but will have her own space and not have to be always in be in contact with people.

________________________________

Flora is a large dog but she was very, very thin when we first rescued her. She was also very upset with the world in general. After several weeks, she has morphed into a beautiful dog, and seems to be much more content with her life. She is about 3-4 years old, and spends most of her day peacefully snoozing under the ample shade.

________________________________

Karishma has rather large ears, but she looks adorable! Initially, she was very scared of people and sat shaking in a corner of her crate. Recently, she had been placed in an enclosure with several other dogs and seems to have built up her self-confidence – she runs around visitors, letting out little barks gleefully.

________________________________

She’s been adopted! Karuna was so friendly compared to the others, that the rescue team actually caught her by hand as she cautiously walked to them looking for some food. She is very manja, very playful and gets attached to people easily. She loves to roll around on the floor, getting her belly rubbed and tickled. She may very well have been someones pet who had been caught and abandoned on the island. She has since been adopted by a very kind lady, who fell in love with her the moment she laid eyes on her pretty face.

________________________________

Liberty has the most beautiful, soulful eyes. Add her droppy ears to the mix, and you have a very sad-looking dog! However, over the last few weeks she has learned that she can trust us, and she is now more confident and at ease. She now walks around sniffing out new visitors and keeping an eye on her friends! She also has an excellent appetite, and is now rather chubby!

________________________________

Meta is a famous face – photos of her eating the carcass of another dog on the island were splashed across websites, as well as the local and international dailies. When animal communicator Irene visited the dogs, she said that Meta felt a deep sense of guilt and was very sorry for what she had done. Irene told her that she was forgiven, as any other dog would have done the same under those cirsumstances – having had no food for weeks. She is a grand-looking, large dog with a haunting gaze. She really needs a home where she will be loved and cared for unconditionally, as she really has had enough of misery and sadness in her life.

________________________________

Adopted ! Mr Miracle @ Romeo was rescued from under a walkway in Pulau Ketam. He was injured, and sat helplessly in the water as the tide rose – swaying with the current. Animal Inspector Murugan rescued him and took him to the vet to be treated. He spent a week at the vet, and came back looking great! His fur is slowly growing back, and he is just a darling – an excellent watchdog, but also a big soppy puppy when it comes to his favourite person Roli, our Swiss volunteer.

Mudita is a very shy dog, but we could easily approach her and stroke her. She has a pretty fluffy tail, and those gorgeous brown eyes that tell her sad tale. She had put on a lot of weight since arriving at our centre, and her coat looks great now!

________________________________

Piccola and Piccolo are close to each other, and they may be related judging from their looks and close bond. Piccola used to be very stand-offish and silent, but she now runs around with Piccolo in their enclosure, circling visitors and barking happily. She also loves her food very, very much!

________________________________

Piccolo is a cutie-pie. About 2 years old, she was initially very unfriendly. Today, she will approach you and sniff you out, running around playfully in little circles as if teasing you! She is a medium-sized dog, with a unique coat. She always has a cheeky look on her face!

________________________________

Ginger is a small-sized mongrel, with a wonderful temperament! Along with Marco, Lucky, Luna and Molly she was part of the fourth batch of rescued dogs from Pulau Selat Kering. Sociable, gentle and tail-waggingly happy – she would make a great companion for a family with children.

________________________________

Bright, energetic and very friendly! This 6 month old pup loves to run and play, and will run up to visitors, wagging her tail wildly and grinning widely! She is adorable, do visit her and make her day!

________________________________

Luna, Luna, Luna. She is pretty. She is smart. She is very, very loving. A little shy at first, she soon warms up. She never wastes a drop of food, as she is grateful for everything she now has. She would make an excellent companion!

________________________________

Macho Marco is shy, but curious about people too. He has a brown-black sleek coat, and a winning smile. He has recovered from a big scald wound on his back, and is slowly mingling with the other dogs.

________________________________

With her bright eyes, and gentle behaviour – Molly is a wonderful little girl. A small sized dog like Ginger, she was covered in wounds and bruises when she first came in. Now she is healing well, and eating well. It takes some time to get to know her, but its worth the wait!

________________________________

Annie and Tinkerbelle are good friends! Annie is still very timid, and tried to avoid eye contact wherever possible. However, she is carefree and curious when left on her own to roam and play.

Buddy would make a good buddy for a family, once he settles down and learns that some people really can be trusted. He has a bad scald mark on his side, and seems like a dog that has been mistreated on more than one occasion. If you have the patience and experience to help him come out of his shell, please come and be his friend.

Suave, sleek and sweet – this is Rocky. Like Buddy, he will take some time to trust again – but he is getting a lot of love and attention from our volunteers! He is a gorgeous dog, and we hope he will learn to love again.

Naughty. Bossy. Adorable. Three words to describe little Tinkerbelle, with her mischievous face and twinkling eyes. She has a very unique howl-bark, which she uses to scold you if she doesn’t like what you’re doing!

Kourtney and Khloe are sisters, who were born at an orang asli settlement in the islands. Their owners could not care for them anymore, and passed them to us in hopes that they would find better homes in the city. Both are bounding, bouncing, brilliant pups – they can wrestle, run, play non-stop for hours – and then they will pass out and sleep peacefully for the next few hours !

Bobby is one of the neutered strays from Pulau Ketam which we brought back to rehome. He is a bundle of energy, and he LOVES people – though he doesn’t like other dogs. He is very loving, and all he wants is a good cuddle. He is shown here in the loving arms of Roli, whom he loves tremendously!

Gentle, pretty and fairy-like – Cotton is a very lovely lady. She is 3-4 years old, and has a brilliant smile that will take your breath away – as demonstrated in the photo above! She loves a rub-down, and wags her stumpy tail furiously when she is happy.

Like the supermodel, our Heidi is classy! She is gentle and quiet, but can’t help wagging her tail like a little pup when you talk to her. She is one cool chick, who deserves a wonderful forever home.

Terry is an athletic dog, who loves to run and scamper about with the other dogs here! Loving, friendly and definitely manja! Terry would do well in a home with other dogs to play with.

MUAR: The police horse unit in Bukit Aman has cantered in for Johor’s community policing programme launched on Saturday.

Muar police chief Asst Comm of police Mohammed Nasir Ramli said the unit would also participate at the launch of the state’s community policing programme at Dataran Tanjung Emas here.

Speaking to reporters, he said the unit would join others in the department in curbing crime and providing additional security in Bandar Maharani.

Easy enough: ACP Mohammed Nasir (second from left) and deputy police chief Supt Lee Choon Guan (left) showing off their riding skills at Dataran Tanjung Emas in Muar Thursday.

“We will have a one-day celebration, which covers exhibitions, canine unit and horse unit shows, and other forms of entertainment for the public,” he said at Dataran Tanjung Emas yesterday.

ACP Mohammed Nasir said Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman, who would be accompanied by Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan, will launch the programme.

He said the programme was aimed at instilling awareness among the people on the importance of public cooperation in combating criminal activities in the state.

Some 1,000 pupils, including schools police cadets, will participate in the programme.

Comments:
Selangor SPCA wonders if this includes criminal acts under the Animal Acts and in particular equine welfare and who will police the police? The DVS? Why does the horse have 2 Numahs and a saddle pad?

First of all a big thank you to Dr. Tammy Pooke, who has now come twice to Awana Spelling Station and treated both horses free of charge. Tammy as some of you may or may not know is a lovely lady who has just moved from S. Africa and is a qualified animal and in particular horse chiropractor. Her number is 017 2185854 if you would like more information on this. My horses have all been done and its not just about my horses getting a good massage out of this but all the little nicks and cricks are sorted and she makes sure that your saddle is properly fitted to your horse. Anyway was up to see Derek two days ago and he is looking so good. I don’t think he is as old as when I first saw him anymore. I would age him anywhere between 17 – 20. His muscles are coming thru now and he is very well. Also very sweet to handle esp. in the stable. I was at first going to send him up to Kelantan RDA as they were needing a bigger quiet horse for their bigger children but under advice from MEM and some vets was told sending a horse to Kelantan was asking for trouble as was told and this is hearsay that there are certain issues with their level of horse care. But given how well Derek has bounced back am not longer too worried about finding him a home. He is just so sweet. There are rumours that he used to be a 1m40 horse but who knows because asking around there used to be another grey called Deren and he could also have been the one that jumped. So no one really knows which horse is which – like having a twin that stole your identity.

Dillon on the other had is just getting old. He is now blind is one eye and suffering from muscle wastage. He’s ribs aren’t showing or anything but his back has shrunk and am not entirely sure how we can build that up again. He doesn’t really respond well to the horse walker and is just stiff. Our vet is coming sometime next week to take a look at him and see what else we can do for him. We might have to be realistic about him but we’ll see. Poor old man.

I presume you guys have been following the horrific stories from Pulau Ketam. If not and you interested do keep yourself updated on the main SPCA website http://www.spca.org.my/v51 . For those of you who have not been following here is the background information:

Pulau Ketam consists of two settlements – Pulau Ketam Village and Sungai Lima Village. Both villages claim to have been facing a stray dog crisis for the last several years. Earlier this month, newspapers reported that Pulau Ketam villagers were trapping stray dogs and transporting them to a 3 vacant island in a desperate attempt to reduce the population of dogs. Sungai Lima villagers later started a similar operation.

Pulau Ketam villagers reported that 312 dogs had already been trapped and abandoned on uninhabited Pulau Tengah out of an estimated population of 2000, while Sungai Lima villagers estimated their stray dog population to be around 600.

SPCA Animal Inspectors Cunera and Murugan, and SAS founder Jackie Tsang made a trip to Pulau Ketam earlier this week. They found that most of the villagers owned dogs themselves, and had no intention of causing harm to the strays on the island. They were frustrated at the stray dog population, which is quickly spiraling out of control – the villagers estimate that there are approximately 2000 strays on the island. The villagers said that they did not want the dogs caught and euthanized, and thought that leaving them to survive on another island would be better. The villagers were upset with the reports in the media, which claimed that they had been burning the dogs or abusing them – which they denied doing.

The team found that during the day time, there were dozens of stray cats and dogs roaming the island. However, when they surveyed a part of the town from 12.30pm-1.30am, they counted 82 dogs in just a small area. The dogs look generally healthy, with several suffering from minor injuries.

At a meeting with the village leaders, they agreed to support a mass sterilization effort for both stray and pet dogs (and cats) by SPCA and SAS.

If you are interested in making a donation:

How You Can Help

SPCA and SAS are appealing to the public to contribute to their Pulau Ketam fund, to aid the emergency rescue and relief efforts over the next several weeks. Funds will be utilized to hire boats for transportation of the dogs, purchase dog food, medical supplies and cages. The start-up fund is RM1,300 – proceeds from a networking event SPCA organized last Sunday.

We also appreciate donations in kind – 3’ x 3’ multipurpose cages, dog biscuits and canned food, food and water bowls, towels, water storage containers, and flea/tick spray. All donated items can be sent to the SPCA Animal Shelter in Ampang Jaya.

Five people have been found guilty of neglecting more than 100 horses, ponies and donkeys on a family farm.

Five people found guilty of neglecting more than 100 horses, ponies and donkeys

RSPCA inspectors discovered the cruelty when they were called to Spindle Farm in Amersham, Buckinghamshire in January last year.

Horse trader James Gray, 45, and his son James Gray Junior, 16, were found guilty of 11 charges under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, while his wife Julie Gray, 41, and daughters Jodie, 26, and Cordelia Gray, 20, were each found guilty of two charges under the same act.

The animals were left to die of starvation in a “horror scene” surrounded by rotting corpses.

Vets who visited Spindle Farm described the situation as the worst case of animal cruelty they had ever seen. RSPCA inspectors found horses kept with little dry bedding and crammed into pens, ankle deep in their own faeces.

Hooves and body parts were also discovered scattered across the farm, along with a mound made up of bones and skulls. Bicester Magistrates’ Court heard there were 140 animals at the farm, many of which were left with little food.

RSPCA chief inspector Rob Skinner said he found 32 carcasses in different locations when he went to look around. Some of these were burnt and dumped on a bonfire while others were left lying on the ground, covered in rubbish.

One dead horse was found on the back of a trailer with ropes around its tail. In total 115 animals, some severely emaciated, had to be rescued and removed from the site.

Mr Skinner said horses looked “dejected” and “emaciated” and some animals could not feed freely as they were being bullied by others. During an inspection he found horses in overcrowded pens littered with faeces.

And he said one pony was unable to stand and had to be rolled over so vets could examine it.

We are very excited with the prospect and look forward to transporting him down on 24 May. Will upload photos and comments of the trip but am not envisaging anything scary on the way down apart from the fact that we are entering a dry state! Finally after a year am so glad someone wants him. He will be perfect for the job I think! Dillon is still milling about up in Awana. He has now gone blind in one eye and I think we need to stop avoiding the issue and think what to do with him. At least he had a good last six month I guess is the small consolation. Dr. Pooke the wonderful new horse Chiro is also going to treat the horses FOC till Derek makes his way to his new family.

YB Hannah Yeoh, State Assembly representative for MPSJ and Christine Chin, SPCA Selangor Chairperson held a press conference to announce that issues on dog-catchers, their methods of catching stray and owned dogs were debated at a Selangor State Assembly Session last week. Selangor State Exco member, YB Ronnie Liu, promised to do due diligence on dog-catchers currently under contract to ensure taxpayers’ money are not wasted.

YB Hannah Yeoh championed the strays’ rights to humane treatment as outlined by the DVS Guidelines on Stray Dog Catching and Euthanasia (May 2008) and urged the Assembly to check on the profile of highlighted dog-catchers that frequently employ cruel methods to catch the dogs. DVS Guidelines state that the animals’ welfare must be given priority at all times and the 5 Freedoms must be taken on account.

5 Freedoms
1. Freedom from hunger and thirst
2. Freedom from discomfort (from the environment)
3. Freedom from pain, injury and disease
4. Freedom to express normal behaviour
5. Freedom from fear and distress

The guidelines also highlighted that trained, compassionate and knowledgeable personnel be employed and that only vets can euthanise the strays in a humane manner. Currently untrained personnel destroy the strays very likely in an inhumane manner. It also stated that kennel sizes be adequate and proper records be kept.

While YB Hannah and Christine applauded DVS for the Guidelines, successful implementation is equally important. YB Hannah suggested that SPCA has representation in the Pound management, on an advisory and monitoring capacity, to ensure smooth and effective implementation of these humane guidelines. Christine said that SPCA Selangor will advise and assist any Municipal in setting up humane pounds that intend to follow the DVS Guidelines.

” This has been the culmination of years of tears and heartbreak. When I first saw how these strays were treated and killed around 5years ago, my heart broke and I cried for days. Sometimes I still cry for them. But crying helps noone and I resolved that SPCA Selangor will take this news to the nation and make a difference in how these strays are treated and how all of us can stop the flow of strays spilling onto the streets from irresponsible owners. Many years of dealing with DVS and individual Municipals resulted in the publication of the DVS Humane Guidelines largely contributed by SPCA Selangor. Today is one of the happiest days of my life! “

Haven’t updated the blog for a long time as am so fed up with animal welfare and I think main body of SPCA are already doing a stand up job so perhaps if and when a horse case comes up they can just take it up in their main body. Or perhaps i need to get a paid person to set this thing up properly as volunteerism doesn’t work in the long run as we all know. I really don’t see why I should have to fight with the DVS at every turn. They typically can’t see anything wrong till its thrown in their faces like Melingsung and even then nothing moves. Am not a martyr and am bored with this whole situation to be honest. When there is a case I can handle it but to make an entire body is just too much work and anyway its all under animal cruelty anyway which the main body does anyway so really what’s the point in doubling up. Looking over a fence and peering at horses and ticking fine in whatever box DVS has on their form is not a proper animal inspection. DVS is an independent body and it should not be swayed by politics and be so obsequious in their fear to not offend – to not ruffle feathers. Are they so cowered by perceived wealth and power that they can’t make a professional judgement. Come on! Why does everything in Malaysia have to boil down to politics is beyond me. Hands are tied because no one wants to step up and make a stand. I think time has come to change and accountability needs to step in. This is tax payers money and I want to know what is being done with my dollar. Who is sitting pretty rubbing their hands in anticipation of the RM 60 billion stimulus? Why are the sports council buying more horses? What is tote board doing with every last cent. I don’t think its anarchy to advocate non paying of taxes on a large scale till we know what is being done with our dollar. This sickness pervades thru society and this includes how horses are managed, bought and sold and viewed largely as status symbols to keep up with the Ibrahim next door who owns an endurance ranch or the Lee who has race horses and so forth with no one willing to monitor and enforce the Animal Act on these untouchable gods. This is why we need an independent judiciary and enforcement officers. One who won’t take bribes and one who won’t be afraid that they could lose their jobs over this. One who has the confidence to say this is wrong! Am ranting a little as its all getting a bit too much. On a different note in November planning to have a non violence against women, children and animals event. A coming together of all the various NGOs to bring awareness on the issue of violence and how violence breeds violence with informal street theater, music, break dancing etc planned. Anyone interested to please email Danielle Faber on elleinadfaber@gmail.com as she is the main co coordinator for this event.

The below came from another blog but its as true for children as its for animals. The apathy is a lugubrious fog that weighs down on everything

CHOW KIT

“I have fallen a little behind with my blog. People have been asking me what I think of the so-called Second Stimulus Package. What I have to say about it can wait a little while longer. My comments would do little to lift the dismay of our citizens and business people with a package as puzzlingly weak, and directionless, as it is large.

Last Thursday I visited Rumah Nur Salam, a centre for homeless children in KL’s Jalan Chow Kit area. Rumah Nur Salam is founded and led by the indefatigable Dr Hartini Zainuddin, the daughter of dear departed friend of mine. I spent some time with the children and toured the centre, which is, as its name implies, a haven of peace in a very troubled area.

Here, in Chow Kit, in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, less than a kilometre from the Twin Towers and a stone’s throw from PWTC, life is cheap, drug users shoot up in the back alleys and children wander the streets hungry. Infants are bought and sold by syndicates, young children are supplied for prostitution and child-pornography. Hundreds of children are on the streets or homeless. They beg and hustle and sell themselves for sex. They are runaways or abandoned or neglected children, vulnerable to STD and HIV, to drug addiction and to rape and murder. Many among them have no registration papers. Although they may have been born to Malaysian parents they are “stateless” and therefore ineligible for free inoculation, medical education or education. They are abused and traded with impunity by criminals and corrupt officials because when they disappear it is without trace. They are nobody’s constituency.

Homeless children and street children in Malaysia number in the tens of thousands. They are in Chow Kit, but also in Dengkil, Jinjang, Pantai Dalam, Kepong, Selayang, Subang Jaya, Petaling Street and Pudu and in the bigger towns across the country. In Sabah and Sarawak, the problem of stateless children is acute.

I sat down to listen to a small circle of community leaders, social workers and volunteers. Some worked with these children. Others worked with other “at risk” groups such as prostitutes, drug users and transsexuals. What these groups have in common is that they are rejected by society. Many of the leaders come from the very groups they now serve. Having picked themselves up, they immediately felt called to give back to others. The work they do is more than a job. It is a full-time commitment around which they have shaped their lives. Some have served here for decades, walking daily up and down streets that the police recently considered “too unsafe” to keep a beat base open in.

They told me of a set of linked issues: poverty, bigotry, crime, social breakdown and bureaucratic indifference. They spoke about government that could not join the dots between ministries to help people, and of announcements of assistance that amounted to nothing.

Having served a constituency in the depths of Kelantan for forty years, I have seen my share of poverty, but urban poverty is brutal. The family unit is broken. Women and children are left to fend for themselves. The weak are prey to the strong. People are bought and sold like things.

Chow Kit holds up a mirror to our society. It is an image we would rather not see. The way we treat the weakest among us places the worth of our entire society in the balance. In God’s sight this weighs more than all the wealth we could accumulate.

There is another sense in which urban poverty test us. It is the weathervane of our social and economic ills. Since December, the number of abandoned children has risen dramatically. For the children freshly abandoned to the street, and for their parents, the recession occurred more quickly, and undeniably, than for our leaders.

Behind the evasive and woolly talk we have had about growth figures and fiscal stimuli are the absolutely tangible consequences of our policy decisions in the lives of ordinary people. Economic management, or the lack of it, has disproportionate consequences on the life-prospects of the most vulnerable members of our society.

I came away humbled by the visit. The quiet, day by day heroism of the community leaders and volunteers working to make a difference in Chow Kit was a lesson in leadership as service. I am grateful for all that they and the children shared with me with such open hearts.”
